I’m not sure exactly what version this started happening, but it was fairly recent. The widget is showing thumbnails for old shows and in the wrong order. If I go to the widget settings and hit save, it fixes the issue temporarily until I either mark a show watched or a new show appears on the list.
I have the same problem. It started in July.
Thanks for reporting!
Are you using a Pixel device from Google? This is a known issue that has been happening for other users. I could not reproduce this on my devices and official emulators, so at this point I believe this is a bug in Google’s Pixel launcher (home screen app).
I asked other users to report this to Google (I don’t know the steps to do this as I don’t have a Pixel device, but apparently it’s possible).
I’m using a Pixel 8 with Android 16. And looking back it is possible that the problem has started with the update to Android 16.
Thanks for the details! I could finally reproduce this when marking an episode watched on Android 16. I’ll look into fixing this for the next release.
Release 2025.2.11, that should (at least partially) resolve this issue, is available for testing on the Play Store beta program.
The issue with posters not updating is likely a flaw in Android 16 and may not be exclusive to Pixel devices after all. I guess there are just no other devices out there that have broadly received an update to Android 16.
For anyone interested, the technical details are documented on the issue tracker.
In the meantime release 2025.2.11 is now available to everyone. Let me know if the widget still has issues on Android 16.
The update has resolved the issue for me. Thank you.
Pixel 10 Pro Android 16
Based on a user report, the fix in 2025.2.11 broke updating widgets on Samsung devices running Android 16.
Another update (version 2025.2.12) is about to be released that should resolve this.
And despite being fine on a virtual Google test device the adjusted workaround for Samsung devices re-introduced the poster not updating issue on Google devices again.
I’ll try to release an update to resolve this by applying the workaround only if a Google device running Android 16 is detected.
The upcoming Android 16 QPR2 update is broken differently breaking my workaround in yet another way.
I’ve decided to not release another update and instead reported this issue to Google. So it hopefully will get fixed in a future update to Android.
Edit: technical details on the SeriesGuide issue and Google issue.
Not the only widget with Android 16 issues.
DigiCal calendar widget is also doing a similar thing. The bullet point icons randomly change into the weather icons, colours are shown wrong, 20% of the time the widget doesn’t display…. So exactly same problems…
@Martin_Dolan Thanks for sharing!
For anyone impacted by this who happens to be a developer, you can +1 the issue reported to Google at Google Issue Tracker to raise awareness.
Ive +1 it, and also added some info, and also pointed the developer of the digi cal app to it.
So, as they say, “The squeaky wheel gets the oil” … The more squeaks, the better haha
